The Tragedy of Melidoni

The cave is also remembered for one of the darkest episodes in the history of Crete during the Greek War of Independence.

In 1824, during the struggle against Ottoman rule, local Christians sought refuge inside the cave. The events that followed resulted in the deaths of those who had taken shelter there and became known as the tragedy of Melidoni.

The memory of these events has given the cave a powerful historical dimension. For visitors, the site is therefore not only a natural attraction, but also a place connected with the history and struggles of the Cretan people.
