A Defining Moment in Cretan History
The Arkadi Holocaust of 1866
The monastery became the focal point of the Cretan Revolution against Ottoman rule and one of the most powerful symbols of the struggle for freedom.
In November 1866, Arkadi became the scene of a dramatic siege. The defenders and civilians who had taken refuge inside the monastery chose resistance rather than surrender.
The explosion of the monastery’s gunpowder magazine, carried out during the final moments of the siege, became one of the defining events of the Cretan struggle and had a significant impact on international public opinion.
